Chips Ahoy Just Announced Its Biggest Recipe Change In 10 Years

It looks like some changes are ashore for Chips Ahoy. The brand just announced a serious update to its signature chocolate chip cookie recipe. The new formula, which has been dubbed Chips Ahoy's "MMMproved" recipe, is its biggest change in 10 years. Sabrina Sierant, a senior director at Chips Ahoy, told Food & Wine that the company invested over 5,000 hours in developing this new recipe. Her team also created 60 new recipes while searching for a new and improved Chips Ahoy formula.

According to Sierant, the new recipe has 15% more chocolate than the previous recipe. Additionally, the chocolate chips have a higher amount of vanilla and cacao, to increase the cookies' chocolate flavor while also rounding out any potential bitterness. But Sierant was clear in noting that these changes won't come at the cost of customer enjoyment. She notes that the company "went with the recipe that kept what [its] customers liked most, including a nice balance of chocolate to cookie, and worked to make that cookie even better" (per Food & Wine). So, customers can expect a delicious new cookie that improves on what already works in the pre-packaged treat. This also includes an improvement in texture, thanks to a new mixing process, as well as new packaging that includes background graffiti art and a matte finish. The new cookie formula is now available in some select markets and will be available nationwide starting in April.

But has it really been 10 years?

It seems like this big change for Chips Ahoy is only the most recent shift in the cookie recipe, at least according to some pretty observant online fans of the prepackaged sweet treat. On Reddit, many fans of the cookie treat noted changes in Chips Ahoy over the years. In a Reddit post made eight years ago, user DeusGiggity noted that "there has definitely been a distinct change in the last few weeks. They don't even look right!" Another Reddit user by the name of Mythicaltimelord noted that they "suspect that Nabisco did something and changed the recipe." However, these suspicions have not been confirmed by the cookie company.

But recipe changes have certainly been made without announcement before. This is not to discount the possibility that one's perception of taste might simply change over the years. After all, most of us have tried a nostalgic childhood treat only to find that it just isn't quite the same as we remember. This change could just be a change in our palates as we transition to adulthood. Regardless of previous possible changes to Chips Ahoy, this newest shift in the recipe is certainly something that the cookie company would like to note and recognize. You'll have to grab a pack for yourself to taste the difference.
