Apple Butter Combines With A Tangy Ingredient To Make An Amish Snack
NEWS

Pennsylvania is home to plenty of obscure dishes, many of which can be credited to the Amish population. One standout snack is made by mixing apple butter with cottage cheese.
In contrast to the sweet tartness of apple butter, cottage cheese — or smearcase, as it's called by the Pennsylvania Dutch — leans heavily into salty and savory flavor profiles.
The complementary flavors bring out the best in each other — the tartness of the apple butter and the creaminess of the cottage cheese. Plus, it's relatively healthy.
To make the snack, simply take a generous scoop of apple butter, mix it in with a dollop of cottage cheese and spread it over a slice of toast, or just eat it on its own.
