In 2019, horticulturalists from Washington State University unveiled a new variety of apple named WA 38, aka Cosmic Crisp, and claimed it can last up to a year if refrigerated.
Cosmic Crisp apples boast a bright crimson skin, a crisp texture, and a flavor that balances sweet and tart notes. The apple variety was mainly bred with storage in mind.
In the US, most local apples aren't available in the summer, as they're harvested in fall. The Cosmic Crisp, however, was bred to taste fresh even after a year of being harvested.
The apples are meant to be kept in controlled atmosphere storage, a commercial system that regulates temperature and controls oxygen and carbon dioxide levels to prevent spoilage.
That said, Cosmic Crisp apples can last for around four months in your standard home refrigerator, which is still good, as most apple varieties last up to two months in the fridge.
