While canned sausage gravy is perfect for when you want a hearty breakfast without having to spend much time in the kitchen, it can often taste bland, boring, or under-seasoned.
Luckily, all you need to do is saute some veggies, add a few herbs, and sprinkle in some seasoning to seriously upgrade your gravy. You can also use sauces to boost the flavors.
Start by incorporating some sauteed mushrooms and onions. Mushrooms are perfect for boosting the extra-tasty umami flavor, while caramelized onions will add sweetness.
For more umami flavor, add a touch of soy sauce or Worcestershire. For an extra kick, add some hot sauce to your gravy or squeeze in a small amount of lemon juice.
When adding herbs, soft herbs like basil and parsley can be added toward the end of simmering, while hard herbs like rosemary and thyme, should be cooked to soften the raw flavor.
