Chicago's deep dish pizza

The Lesser Known Type Of Chicago-Style Pizza

While most people know about Chicago's deep dish pizza, there is another kind called tavern-style pizza. In fact, a lot of people have said that Chicagoans prefer it to deep dish.
It has a thin, crispy, circular crust, similar to matzah, that leans toward being like a large cracker. With that, it tends not to be stacked with a lot of toppings.
You can expect to find fairly classic pizza toppings on it: tomato sauce and cheese are standard, and sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, and peppers are common options.
The topping that sets it apart from other American pizzas is giardiniera, spicy Italian pickled vegetables. It's also cut into small rectangles and triangles rather than slices.
