While New York has 1,431 Dunkin' stores as of April 2024, places like Idaho, Puerto Rico, North Dakota, South Dakota, American Samoa, Washington, and Oregon have none.
Guam, Montana, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands also lack Dunkin’ locations. There could be a couple of reasons why this is the case.
In an interview with Entrepreneur, Grant Benson, the company's senior VP of franchising and development, claims there isn't a specific reason the chain hasn't expanded to a state.
However, it's perhaps no coincidence that several of the states — like Montana, North and South Dakota — without a Dunkin' also rank among the lowest populations in the country.
As for the West Coast states, Dunkin' is likely approaching a venture into these states with caution and strategic thinking due to the popularity of Krispy Kreme and Starbucks.
