New Zealand's Food Scene, Baking, Food History
  • Kathryn attributes her love of food (specifically baking) to her nana, who introduced her to choux pastries filled with chocolate cream, rum balls, and the perfect chocolate chip cookie.
  • Her first job was working in a cafe, where she spent a considerable amount of time behind the coffee machine. Sadly, this was before she discovered her love of caffeine.
  • Her most notable achievement is working for the last four-plus years as the lead food writer for Urban List New Zealand, a role that has seen her reviewing the latest bars, restaurants, cafes, and bakeries in Auckland.

Experience

Kathryn has more than a decade of copywriting experience under her belt, primarily in the area of food. She began her career straight out of high school, contributing to a local surfing magazine while simultaneously completing a correspondence course in freelance journalism. Kathryn then went on to work for a number of different publications covering everything from music and film to pets and weddings. After this, her food writing story began, as she took up a job as a journalist on two hospitality-based business-to-business magazines. Kathryn joined Chowhound in 2024 and is excited to continue sharing her love of sugar, spice, and all things nice with a broader audience.

Education

Kathryn has a certificate in freelance journalism from the New Zealand Institute of Business Studies.
